Up to eight fully funded scholarships for emerging countries are being offered by the University of Bonn, and the United Nations University Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS). These scholarships are available for those interested in pursuing a Joint Master of Science (M.Sc.) program in “Geography of Environmental Risks and Human Security.”

These scholarships are available for those interested in pursuing a Joint Master of Science (M.Sc.) program in “Geography of Environmental Risks and Human Security.”

The scholarship’s ultimate aim is to foster intercultural exchange and to enable students to contribute to the long-term development of their native countries by utilizing the knowledge gained during the study program.

Non-native English speakers must demonstrate adequate English language proficiency.

Eligibility

• Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Geography or a similar / equivalent professionally certified study program. Applicants should have accumulated at least 100 European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System during courses related to any of the three following areas: Human Geography and Social Sciences with a focus on spatial patterns, society, and development; Science methodology and empirical research methods; Physical Geography, Geosciences, and Environmental Sciences with a major focus on spatial patterns, society, and development.

• To research and excel in this Master’s Programme, you must have a strong desire to contribute to the field of human security and risk management related to environmental change.

• Applicants must be extremely motivated to learn in a multicultural, interdisciplinary environment. Candidates from developing countries must have an at least two years of related professional experience in order to be evaluated for a scholarship through the German Academic Exchange Service’s Development-Related Postgraduate Programmes (Epos).

Entrance Requirement

In addition to the general eligibility criteria for the Master’s programme, Qualified candidates should fulfil the following requirements :

• Having at least two years of practical work experience (for example, with a Public organization, Not for profit organization, or the private sector) in a specialty related to the study program.

• Being a “Developing Country” candidate (according to the classification of the DAAD)

• Having graduated from the Bachelor not more than five years ago;

• Candidate must not have completed a Master’s degree in a related field of study

• Aiming at a career as a practitioner in a field related to the programme of study;

• English Language Requirement:

Non-native English speaking candidates must prove sufficient proficiency in the English language.

Procedure for Applying:

• An application form that has been completed and signed

• A signed résumé/CV

• A current résumé, which including a chronological listing of employment and other significant activities, must be submitted with any application.

o Only transcripts certified by the university where the degree was obtained will be accepted.

o If the transcript is written in a language other than English, an accredited translation into English or German is however necessary.

o Certified translations can be provided by either the original university or an authoritative national or international institution.

• Motivation letter: A one- to two-page written statement explaining their inspiration, background, previous work in the intended field of study, area of proposed research, plans for further postgraduate study, and any other details they think is pertinent. Applicants who are currently enrolled in another university’s postgraduate program should explain why they want to change programs.

• An English language proficiency certificate for non-native English speakers or applicants from countries where English is not the official language.

• A copy of the Bachelor Thesis or academic essay completed as part of the first degree (preferably in English).

• If the candidate desires to be considered for Epos funding by the DAAD, the candidate should include the DAAD application form, a motivation letter with reference to the current occupation, academic letters of recommendation from your university carrying recent dates, stamped and signed), specialist letters of recommendation from your employer (with recent dates, stamped and signed), as well as a confirmation of employment from the employer in your home country and, if probable, a verification of employment from the employer in your home country.

• Additional supporting documents for your application:

o Additional professional experience and expertise certificates (recommended for Epos applicants)

o In cases where additional academic credits were obtained in addition to the degrees awarded, candidates should provide additional Certified Transcripts

o Recommendation letters

All documents must be scanned and submitted as one PDF file. Only Epos applicants have the option of organizing their application into two files. Each file’s file size should not exceed 8 Megabytes (MB). Completed application packets should be emailed to master-georisk@ehs.unu.edu.
